What we do

Agriculture, food, nutrition and health

Use of edible crickets as a sustainable food resource to enhance livelihoods and curb food and nutrition insecurity in Kenya

Research and trials on commercial farming techniques have been developed in Kenya. Our project will cascade the techniques to produce nutritious, affordable and sustainable nutrient rich meals to the low income earners. Households will be empowered to farm crickets using new techniques and cook meals enriched with crickets. The cooking techniques will be promoted among these households. Mothers will be empowered to cook delicious, nutritious meals for their households.

Objectives
  1. Decreasing the rate of malnutrition among lactating mothers and children.
  2. Increased household incomes from sale of crickets
  3. Improved nutritional status of children and women

Environment, renewable energy and climate change

Mass production of the Black Soldier Fly (BSF) for environmental conservation and poverty eradication and in Kenya

The Black Soldier Fly is able to reduce the manure pollution potential by 50-60% through nutrient concentration; it reduces noxious odours, reduces harmful bacteria, and reduces housefly populations. Fly larvae can provide an excellent source of animal proteins for local poultry farms and their production alleviates the environmental problem of manure accumulation. Mass production of flies that feed on tonnes of rotting food and waste every day, will lead to production of tonnes of larvae high in proteins and fatty acids as well as tonnes of organic fertilizer as a by-product. From black soldier fly farming, it would be possible to get on average 150 tonnes of protein from a hectare of land per year, significantly above 0.9 tonne of soy per hectare (PROteINSECT,2014).

Objectives
  1. Establishing a new methodology of waste disposal
  2. Introduce nutritious animal feeds to the mainstream market
  3. Introduce a self-sustaining income generating activity to the community

The development of different types of Community managed Development Funds combined with entrepreneurship trainings and trainings on financial literacy have already assisted thousands of people to improve their living conditions. ASE plans to increase activities in the field of entrepreneurship especially in Kenya.
